Do not approve it from a general “water-resistant” description. ASTM D6134/D6134M specifically covers unreinforced vulcanized EPDM and butyl sheets used to stop water under hydrostatic pressure from entering a structure. State the required water head and exposure time, then test the finished sheet and seam to one pass/fail leakage limit written on your purchase specification.
Set the limit together with a named test condition because a percentage without time and temperature is not comparable. One commercial EPDM waterproofing membrane reports +1.7% after ASTM D471 exposure at 70°C for 166 hours, against a referenced range of +8% to -2%. You can use that as a screening benchmark, then tighten or relax it for your medium and service life. We will report your compound’s measured change under the condition written into the order instead of calling every low-absorption sheet “waterproof.”
Treat the seam as part of the waterproof system, because an intact sheet can still leak at a weak joint. A published EPDM membrane specification uses “sheet failure or at least 50 lb/in” as its factory-seam criterion, and the tested sample failed in the sheet rather than at the seam. Put that type of single minimum seam-strength rule on your order, then test the production joint after its specified cure time before shipment.
